Online Safety at Weddington Primary School

Online Safety is an integral part of teaching and learning at Weddington Primary School.

From Foundation Stage to Year 6, children regularly receive lessons in Online Safety.

It is important to be able to enjoy using the internet, it is a fantastic source of information, fun and friendship.

Below you will find lots of fantastic links to help you with keeping yourself and your children safe online.

The RHC button is an asset of SWGfL, a charity working internationally to ensure all benefit from technology, free from harm.

The button has been developed to offer anyone living in the UK a simple and convenient mechanism for gaining access to reporting routes for commonly used social networking sites, gaming platforms, apps and streaming services alongside trusted online safety advice, help and support. It also provides access to an online mechanism for reporting online harm to the RHC service for those over the age of 13 where an intial report has been made to industry but no action has been taken. RHC will review content in line with a sites' community standards and act in a mediatory capacity where content goes against these.

Children under 13 years of age are encouraged to tell an adult that they trust about what has happened and to ask for their help in reporting this going through our how we can help resource together.

RHC also have advice and links to reporting routes for other online harms people may come across or face, such as impersonation, privacy violations and intimate image abuse. 

The RHC button provides a gateway to the RHC reporting pages, an area of the RHC website offering: 

  • links to reporting routes on commonly used sites for 8 types of online harm

  • help, advice and support on what to do if experiencing or witnessing harm online

  • signposting to industry partners reporting forms and the ability to reportlegal but harmful content directly to RHC for further investigation

Reporting to RHC

Reports can be made 24/7 through the online reporting forms and helpline practitioners will review and respond to reports  within 72 hours between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

Reports can be made to RHC by anyone over the age of 13. SWGfL operates 3 helplines and to be sure you're getting the right support take a look at the Helpline flowchart to find out who can best support you.

Kindness, thoughtfulness, respect

It's never too early to teach your children to be kind, thoughtful and respectful.

Remind them, when they post online, make sure the post is kind, that they have thought about how people will feel or react to the post and most importantly to respect themselves and others.

This is a great basis to make the internet and truly enriching, enjoyable experience.

Fantastic Online Safety Resources

Smoothwall Online Safety Hub

As part of our Digital Safeguarding subscription, we now have access to the Smoothwall Online Safety Hub. This is a great opportunity for parents to gain a deeper understanding of what their children are doing online, thus providing them with the knowledge and confidence to speak to their children about safe digital behaviours. 
The hub is also a central place where students can find out about key online safety topics or request articles from safeguarding experts, of their own choosing, and gives parents access to up to date digital safety information, app reviews from digital safety experts, and in depth information on popular social media and gaming platforms.

Qustodio – free accounts for parents 

In addition to this, you can also sign up for a free Qustodio account at https://www.qustodio.com . Qustodio gives parents and carers the ability to monitor two household devices for the year (including a 30 day premium trial). Although there is an option to upgrade to a premium version, parents can access the basic version for free.

Online Safety - Lego Conversation Starters

  • Does your child love to play with Lego?
  • Would you like to have more conversations about their online use but you don't know where to start?
  • Would you like to spend some time playing with your children while they learn how to use the internet responsibly and safely?

Gaming or Gambling?

Many of our children love to play online games. It can be a great way for them to have some down time and socialise with their friends; promoting problem solving, team work and encouraging healthy competition, gaming is certainly not something to be banned.

However, as with most online activities, there are associated risks and areas for concern, the newest issue being that children are taking part in online gambling from a young age.

The staggering volume of content that children have access to in their pocket means that they have to make choices every day about what they view.

Without being empowered with the knowledge and tools to make the right decisions for themselves, navigating this new world of content can be a tricky thing to do.

The British Board of Film Classification have been rating content for more than 100 years, so are well-placed to help families choose what's right for them and avoid what's not.

They've just launched two new websites packed with up-to-date resources designed to support pupils and families when viewing content online and offline.
