English and maths will be set on alternate weeks on a weekly basis. Homework will be handed out on a Friday and the children will have 7 days to complete their homework to be handed in on the following Friday.
All homework will reflect what has been taught in school to help with consolidating learning.
The children in Year 3 have been split into to 2 spelling groups and will be taught by Miss Bilson and Miss Daffern. It is essential that we rebuild the children’s confidence with certain spelling patterns and sounds before moving onto to more trickier spellings. This will be reassessed at the end of Autumn term.
Spellings will be introduced on Monday and tested on a Friday.
All children have access to Spelling Shed which is a valuable online tool. Children should be accessing this at home via their log on and playing minimum 5 – 10 mins per day to really embed the sounds and spelling patterns. In turn, this will help with long term memory and increase their weekly spelling scores.
Children to come to school in their P.E kits on their designated days. Please ensure that your child comes appropriately dressed following school PE dress code.
Swimming sessions will commence on Friday 13th September and run all the way through to February 2025. Sessions will be held at Atherstone Leisure centre and delivered by qualified instructors in ability groups. Children will travel by coach.
Rowling class have received their swimming letter.
Children have all been issued with a colour banded reading book and they have been encouraged to also pick a free reading book from either the classroom, library or home to really in still that love and passion for reading.
The Year 3 expectation is for you to read with your child minimum of 3 times per week and record it in their reading record.
A parent, carer or guardian signature will be required for each read.
Please refer to the new reading records for guidance and examples on possible questions that you could ask your child about the text which they are reading.
Reading logs and reading books are expected to be in school every day as part of school equipment and will be checked and signed by school every FRIDAY.

Book Week:
Year 3 have had a roaring start to the school year with an exciting book week! They have dove deep into the wonderful story of ‘Gigantosaurus’ by Jonny Duddle and ‘The Fossil Hunter’ by Kate Winter. Children have looked at each character in-depth and the morals that are embedded deep within this children’s text: Truth, lies, perseverance, aspiration and friendship. All of these values aligning beautifully with our school vision and values.
Children have completed, grammar skills based on prepositions and speech punctuation, art work linked to fossils, Conscience alley linked to PSHE, reading comprehension based on the famous scientist and fossil hunter Mary Anning, the structure of volcanoes for Geography and even had a dinosaur themed P.E lesson based on attacking and defensive skills whereby children where tasked to guard a nest of dinosaur eggs.
There extended write culminated in a wonderful, high creative and vocabulary rich Acrostic or Concrete poem based on GIGANTOSAURUS!

Year 3 have flourished in Autumn term and have really showed their creativity and passion in their learning.
We kicked off the term with a fabulous theme week looking at the country of Portugal. The children enjoyed learning about this beautiful country from comparing the flags of the U.K and Portugal, the weather of both countries, music- playing the ukulele and learning about the famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. The children completed grammar skills based on headings and subheadings, bullet points and informative openers. They were then able to use their skills and knowledge to write an informative and detailed fact file about him. In P.E. they even had a Ronaldo themed lesson with a football coach based on skills and were able to score a goal and celebrate with the famous Ronaldo celebration Their curiosity and enthusiasm for this week was a joy to see.
The Stone Age was our main theme this term and it has been a thoroughly informative and interesting topic! We used the story of the Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. Children have looked at the characters of the Stone Age Boy and Om- in depth and the morals in the text of; friendship, kindness, acceptance and perseverance. These values aligning with our school values and Weddington’s vision. The children have written a postcard home from the perspective of the boy embedding the grammar skills they have learnt including; high quality openers, expanded noun phrases, similes and high-level vocabulary. The postcards have been displayed in our wonderful writers display and reflect the exceptional work the children have produced this term. In our theme lessons the children have learnt about all 3 periods of the Stone Age, comparing homes throughout the period, tools and weapons used, and have even created their own Stone Age cave paintings.
To finish off this fabulous term in our Christmas theme week we looked at the text of ‘The Snowman and the Snowdog’ by Raymond Briggs. The children looked at the themes of this story of: loss, friendship and hope. In PHSE we looked at the difficult feelings of loss and created coping strategies to help ourselves and others with these feelings. We also wrote a letter to Santa asking for a pet like the boy did in the story using persuasive language to ask politely to Santa.
The children also looked at Christmas around the world and loved learning about how people celebrate the festive season. Year 3 created Snowman Christmas cards, a calendar, aspirations for the year and even a keyring. It was a fabulous, fun festive week. We finished of the festive week with a whole year-group traditional dancing lesson inspired by the Snowman party scene from ‘The Snowman and the Snowdog’. Dancing in pairs children learned a routine featuring lively hand clapping, cheerful skipping and dynamic do-si-dos. The hall was filled with smiles and infectious energy as every child took part with enthusiasm. Their joy and teamwork made it the perfect end to a truly magical festive week.
During our whole class reading sessions, the children thoroughly enjoyed the story of Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. In class discussions, we talked through the themes in the story of; friendship, loss, respect and mindfulness. The values in the book align with the school’s vision and values beautifully. The children then chose to watch the film adaptation in the last week of term and thoroughly enjoyed both the film and book.
Our new story is the for whole class reading is ‘The Wild Robot’ by Peter Brown. The children can not wait to read the story and discover what happens to the wild robot Roz and the adventures she will undertake.
